From: “TORTYUR: Human Rights Violations During The Marcos Regime”
“Peter Villaseñor was brought to a camp in Bataan where he was tortured for nine nights and nine days. While he was hung naked from the ceiling, soldiers would flick his genitals and walis tambo was inserted into his urinary tract. Thumbtacks were also inserted into his fingertips. Bayonets were placed in his elbows and his mouth. Naked, he was made to sit on three blocks of ice. Electric shock was applied to his toe and his genitalia. A stone was knocked repeatedly on his knees. While his head and stomach were beaten, water drops were forced into his nose.” Read all: Chua – Tortyur (Revised 2023-09-24)

From: “HARING BAYAN: Democracy and People Power in the Philippines”
“People Power was not just those four days in 1986. It didn’t even start in 1983 with the death of a senator in an airport tarmac. It began with many people continuing the fight and offering their lives as soon as Martial Law was proclaimed.
“The spirit of People Power has always been embedded in the very root idea of democracy—from the Greek δηµοκρατία (dēmokratía), DEMOS means people and KRATIA means leadership or power. In the Western world, people had associated democracy with representative government, right to suffrage, political freedom, and civil liberties such as freedom of speech.” Read all: Chua – Haring Bayan (Revised 2023-09-24)

From: “LUTONG MACOY: Philippine Elections under the Marcos Regime, Comparisons and Lessons for Today” (Xiao Chua with Joshua Duldulao)
“We would see that People Power improved the electoral situation as compared to elections held under Marcos. It democratized participation, but not as much as we desire it to be, ‘Lutong Macoy,’ under new and improved ways, seems to still exist. But hope is seen in the continued participation and commitment of the Filipino people to clean, honest and orderly elections.” Read all: Chua and Duldulao – Lutong Macoy The Marcos Elections (Revised 2023-09-24)
